CAUTION!!! BOGUS "CASHIER'S CHECKS"

COUNTERFEIT "Cashier's Checks", supposedly issued by Rocky Mountain Credit Union, are being circulated by internet "scammers" attempting to defraud unsuspecting people. There are several variations of the bogus checks, but all have the Rocky Mountain Credit Union name and logo on them. Most are mailed to people selling items over the internet, and the "Cashier's Check" is usually made out for several thousand dollars more than the purchase price. The "buyer" requests that the seller immediately wire, via Western Union, the excess funds to a third party "shipping agent" to cover shipping charges for the item purchased. If the seller wires the money as requested, he will be out that money when the counterfeit check bounces. Nobody will arrive to claim the item "purchased", these scammers are only interested in the cash. Other versions of the scam involve phony inheritances, sweepstakes, loans, investments, apartment rentals, and even marriage proposals. If an Internet acquaintance from a foreign country asks you to cash a check and wire the funds as a favor, you are being scammed.

If you have received a "Cashier's Check" issued by Rocky Mountain Credit Union, DO NOT DEPOSIT OR ATTEMPT TO CASH THE CHECK UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED IT'S AUTHENTICITY!! DO NOT WIRE TRANSFER ANY MONEY TO ANYBODY!!

For security reasons, we cannot display an image of a valid Rocky Mountain Credit Union check, or our authorized signatures, on this website. The following images are samples of the COUNTERFEIT checks which are being used by the scammers. Most of the counterfeits have no watermark on the reverse side, are printed on thin paper stock, and have no perforations on any of the edges. Many have uneven printing. If your "Cashier's Check" is similar in appearance to any of these checks, and has a signature similar to one shown on these samples, IT IS DEFINITELY A COUNTERFEIT.

If you can determine that your "Cashier's Check" is counterfeit by the information provided by this website, it is NOT NECESSARY to call Rocky Mountain Credit Union or fax any information to us. If your "Cashier's Check" has a different appearance or a different signature, you may call us at (406) 447-1120, and we will verify its validity.

We have notified the authorities of this problem. Agents of the FBI, Secret Service, U.S. Postal Inspector, and U. S. Customs are working to stop this operation. It appears this scam originates in Nigeria, and unfortunately the Nigerian government does not cooperate with U.S. authorities in getting it shut down.

After verifying that the "Cashier's Check" you received is fraudulent, what can you do to help fight this crime?

1. We appreciate your willingness to help by providing the e-mails, names, addresses, and phone numbers that the scammer has provided to you, but it is not necessary. The names and addresses are false, and the phone numbers and e-mail addresses are untraceable. The Secret Service does have a Task Force assigned to this scam, however there are so many bogus checks being circulated that the Task Force is deluged with calls. The Task Force personnel really only want to talk to victims who have lost money to the scammers. If you feel physically threatened by the scammer, we suggest you contact your local law enforcement.
2. We would like you to educate your friends, family, co-workers, (and anyone else who will listen) about your experience with the scammer. Show them what a fraudulent check looks like, and explain how the scammer attempted to rip you off. The more people who are aware of this scam, the less people out there to fall for it.
